FuelCosts.co.uk is built on the UK Government's official Fuel Finder open data scheme, created after the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) found drivers were paying more because pump prices were hard to compare. Participating retailers — from supermarket giants like Tesco, Sainsbury's, Asda and Morrisons to brands like BP, Shell and Esso — must publish their prices within 30 minutes of changing them at the pump.
We collect those prices every 4 minutes for standard unleaded (E10), super unleaded (E5), diesel (B7) and premium diesel across thousands of forecourts in England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. As well as live prices, we track price drops, historical trends, the best day of the week to buy and average prices for every town and city — so you can see whether your local station is a bargain or a rip-off before you drive there.

Prices vary widely between stations — supermarket forecourts are often several pence cheaper than the national average, while motorway services can be 15–20p more expensive.
Prices on FuelCosts.co.uk are refreshed every 4 minutes from the Government's official Fuel Finder scheme, which requires fuel retailers to report price changes within 30 minutes of them taking effect at the pump. That means the price you see here is usually the price you'll pay when you arrive.

Local competition is the biggest factor — stations near a cheap supermarket forecourt tend to price lower, while stations with no nearby rivals charge more. Supermarkets use fuel to attract shoppers so they typically undercut oil company brands, and motorway services are consistently the most expensive places to fill up. Even within one town the gap between the cheapest and dearest station is often 10p per litre or more.
